How to check a personal loan rate without hurting your credit

By Tora Mari Editorial Team · Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

In short

Soft credit checks let you see likely rates without affecting your score. A hard inquiry only happens when you accept an offer and apply.

Soft check or hard check?

A soft inquiry lets a lender look at your credit without affecting your score. Many lenders use one when you check your rate, sometimes called prequalifying.

A hard inquiry happens when you submit a full application. It can lower your score slightly for a while, and it shows on your report.

Steps to shop safely

  1. Look for wording such as "checking your rate won't affect your credit score" before you enter details.
  2. Check rates with several lenders and write down the APR, fees, term and monthly payment.
  3. Compare them using total cost, not just the monthly payment.
  4. Pick one, then submit the full application. Expect the hard inquiry at that point.

What a prequalified rate is not

It is an estimate. Your final rate, amount and approval depend on the lender's full review and on what you submit. It can change.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying for several loans in full, which means several hard inquiries.
  • Choosing by monthly payment alone. A longer term lowers it and raises total cost.
  • Paying any fee before the loan is funded. That is a warning sign.
