Best way to pay off credit card debt: snowball, avalanche or a loan?

By Tora Mari Editorial Team · Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

In short

The best way is the one you will stick with and that lowers your total interest. Compare the avalanche, the snowball and consolidation using your own numbers.

Three common ways

  • Avalanche. Pay the minimum on everything, and put extra money on the card with the highest interest rate first. It usually costs the least in interest.
  • Snowball. Put extra money on the smallest balance first. You clear accounts sooner, which can keep you motivated, but it can cost more in interest.
  • Consolidation loan. Combine balances into one fixed payment. It helps only if the loan's total cost is lower than what you pay now.

How to choose

If one card has a much higher rate, the avalanche tends to save more. If you need quick wins to stay on track, the snowball can help. If you have many cards and good-enough credit to get a lower all-in rate, a loan can simplify things. Try your numbers in the calculators and compare totals.

Whatever you choose

  1. List every balance, rate and minimum payment.
  2. Decide a fixed monthly amount you can really afford.
  3. Stop adding new charges to the cards you are paying off.
  4. Check progress each month and adjust.

If you feel stuck

A nonprofit credit counseling agency can review your situation and may offer a debt management plan. Be cautious with companies that charge large upfront fees or promise to erase your debt.
